Electric Rc Cars Drifting

Drift is considered to be when car wheels slip either only rear wheels or both ( front and rear ) wheels then the car started sliding sideways while taking a high speed in the corner.

History of drifting car was started somewhere in 1970’s in Japan . Drifting has ability to get rear tires to slide more than front tires meant it could power much faster than another car around corner. this techniques was adapted on the winding mountain roads and this make car drifting is very popular in Japan.

And now this popularity has spilled over to rc cars. If you have ever watched rc cars drifting, you will be instantly hooked.

This new challenging driving skill has made the Electric RC car drift one of the most popular cars in the RC world. If you can master the drifting technique with these cars, you can even join the RC Drift Car Competition,

For drifting, electric rc cars are better than nitro models. It is because of their lighter weight , motor durability and easier to control the throttle during a drift. Nitro rc cars would probably burn out the clutch and overheat the engines if used for drifting.

There are advantages of Electric RC car models. Electric RC drift cars offer more consistent torque and faster throttle response than nitro models and make them the better option for RC drifting.

Electric motors effectively produce instant torque, where nitro engines, take time for the engine to spool up and clutch to engage. Electric RC drift cars use high capacity compact batteries to drive a brushed or brushless motor via an electronic speed control.

It is recommended that you use a shaft drive rc car rather than a belt driven transmission for your drifter. The shaft drive provides good throttle response compare to belt drive. But don’t worry about that because many RC community use belt drive cars for drifting without problems. But if you are starting from scratch, shaft drive cars may be the best drifters. Also, use a 4 wheel drive machine if you want to go drifting. 4×4 is easier to control and drift. The only item you need to convert your touring car into a drift car is to change the tires. RC drift cars use tires that are made out of PVC pipes. You can also buy specially made drift tires made by Yokomo, HPI and Tamiya.

Proper control may be difficult at first, but with some practice it will gives you a better experience because practice is the basis of a great drifter. Creating your own videos is a good and easy way to view progress, and learn from your mistakes.

One will find a good inclusive list of popular drifting techniques. Some are comparatively easier to do than others. It should be tried to see which one is suitable. Many professional drifters don’t integrate all these techniques into their techniques. It should not be thought to learn all of them to be good in drifting. Although there are some techniques that are needed to know. They are necessary like the ‘heel and toe shifting’. It may help anyhow, although these should be practiced in a safe and legal location.
Drifting Techniques with Clutch

• Shift Lock Drift
While a turn is being approached, the driver downshifts and dropping the rpm to slow down the drive train. The clutch is then released which makes the back wheels to slow down immediately and lock up so they lose traction.

• Heel And Toe Shifting
For initiating this type of technique, as the name suggests, the technique requires the use of heel and toe. The driver is required to press the brakes with the right foot, while at the same time pressing the clutch using the left foot. The toes and the heel slides over to the accelerator for revving the engine up before down shifting the vehicle. With this technique, there will be smooth downshifting without the vehicle being jolted.

• Clutch Kick Drift
While the driver approaches the turn, the clutch is held, the rpm is increased and downshifts. The driver then releases the clutch; it has a smooth effect and makes a power surge that makes the back wheels lose their traction. This is a basic drifting technique.

Brake-Based Drifting Techniques

• Braking Drift
When the driver enters the turn, the brakes are applied to push the car’s weight to the front wheels, it makes the back wheels to rise losing its traction. The driver then uses a combination of braking and shifting for holding the drift without locking up the back wheels.

• E-Brake Drift
This is a basic drifting technique. When the driver enters a turn, he pulls the emergency brake locking the back wheels. He then steers into the turn and the back end swings out causing a drift.

• Long Slide Drift
This is a drifting technique on a long straightaway while approaching a turn. At a high speed of up to 100 mph, the driver pulls the emergency brake initiating a long drift while maintaining it into the turn. This is a rather simple method for initiating the drift.

Other Drifting Techniques

• Choku-Dori (Swaying Drift)
As the name suggests, this drifts give a looks of swaying. The drift begins on a long straight approach to a turn. When the car starts drifting, the steering is used for maintaining the drift in the form of a side-to-side action making the car sway at its back end.

• Kansei Drift
While entering a turn at a high speed, the gas pedal is suddenly released by the driver to shift the weight to the front wheels, this initiate a drift as the rear tires lose their traction. This method initiates a drift.

• Power Over Drift
For this drift, the driver accelerates into and through the entire turn making the back end swinging out as the weight shifts on exit. A lot of horsepower is required for this drifting technique.

• Feint Drift
For achieving this drift, the technique requires the driver to steers the car to the outside of the turn on the approach, this pushes the car’s weight to outside wheels. The driver then quickly steers back into the turn. When the suspension of the car kicks back, the reaction is very fast and the weight is shifted so quickly making the back end to flick out initiating a drift.

• Jump Drift
While entering a turn, the driver bounces the inside rear tire over the inner curb for shifting the weight of the car to the outside wheels inducing a loss in the traction, this method initiates a drift.

• Dirt Drop Drift
For initiating this drift, the driver drops the rear tires off the race course into the dirt. This method helps initiating a drift and maintaining a speed for holding a drift through multiple turns, the drift angle can also be increased during a single turn.

These are photos of my newest project. For some inexplicable reason, I felt the desire to get into RC racing. I really enjoy car racing, especially the science and physics behind it. Since I”m a non-driver, and not a millionaire, RC racing is probably the closest I’ll come to getting behind the wheel of a racecar. This particular care is an HPI Sprint 2 Sport Drift car with a Toyota Trueno body. It’s an AWD drift car, so the suspension, tires, motor placement steering are setup for going sideways. I buiult the car and painted the body over a couple days, and for my first shot at creating a car I’m pleased what the way it came out. I shot half of these photos with my Nikon D70S DSLR and half with Nikon Coolpix S570 point and shoot camera. May 6, 2010.

CAR INSURANCE SCAMS AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Car insurance scams cost insurance companies billions of dollars each year. But in the end, everyone has to pay. As a result of scams and staged accidents, auto insurance premiums increase for us all, and innocent people are sometimes tragically injured.

There are well-known tactics that criminals use in their attempts to
defraud auto insurance companies. Being aware of these criminal
schemes may allow you to protect yourself and your family, and can also
help keep car insurance premiums down.

Swoop & Squat

In this particular scam, the perpetrator’s car (i.e. the criminal) will
suddenly swoop in next to the victim’s car, forcing the victim to
change lanes. Unbeknownst to the victim, the car that he/she now
follows is also involved in the scam. This second criminal car
will abruptly slam on the brakes, forcing the victim to plow into the
car’s rear end. This “squat” car will often be packed with
passengers, who will all file fraudulent medical claims. The
medical injuries that are supposed to have been suffered are hard to
detect, like neck injuries and soft tissue damage. Also, the
doctor who evaluates these fake victims may be included in the scam as
well.

The Wave

On a congested street, the criminal car will “wave” the victim car in,
effectively giving them the right-of-way. But when the victim
tries to merge into the lane or make a turn, the scammy car will speed
up, initiating a collision. When the police arrive, the criminal
driver will deny any knowledge of the wave and declare the victim to be
at-fault.

T-Bone

This normally takes place on a desolate street. The criminal car
will wait an intersection for a potential victim to drive up.
Once the criminal sees a car, they speed up and collide into the
victim’s car as it passes through the intersection. Bogus
witnesses are on the scene so that when the police arrive, they claim
that the victim ran a red light or a stop sign.

Paper Accident

Criminals, along with shady participants in an auto body shop, will
submit a fake claim for a phantom accident. They will keep the
claim under a 00, since car insurance companies will rarely
investigate claim for that amount.

Side Swipe

In a double turn lane, a criminal car will wait until the victim’s car
drifts into the far lane. At the moment they will hit the gas,
and side swipe the victim’s car.

Fake Helpers

This is the name given to scammers who show up at the accident scene
with all sorts of helpful information. They appear like angels
ready to offer assistance during the victim’s time of need, complete
with numbers and contact info for auto repair shops. However,
this is the kind of help that you most definitely do not
want. These “runners” or “cappers” (as they are sometimes
referred to) will be working with body shops that inflate prices in
order to rip-off insurance companies.

How To Avoid These Scams

Now that you know what to look out for, here are some tactics of your
own that you can employ to protect yourself and save money on your car
insurance:

Leave plenty of distance between your car and the car in front of
you. This is a defensive driving technique that gives you space
to stop in case they suddenly slam on the brakes, and can save you if a
scammer is trying to force you into an accident.

Never blindly follow a “wave” when merging, changing lanes or making a
turn.

Take pictures at the scene of an accident (keep a disposable camera in
your glove compartment). It is much harder for a criminal to
commit fraud when there is visual evidence present.

Only use auto body shops and doctors that you trust. If contemplating using a new shop or doctor for the first time, seek outrecommendations and reviews. If you suspect you are the victim of a scam, get in touch with theNational Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). They can be reached at1-800-835-6422 or at their website: www.nicb.org. Remote Control Drifting is taking off in a big way, in this article I show you step by step how to convert that old 1/10 touring car into a drifters dream machine. It’s very simple and generally only takes a couple of hours, using this practical guide I’ll have you sideways before you know it.

What exactly is drifting?

In a nut shell drifting is the art of changing the angle of attack of your car, while still maintaining full control, so in a typical drift driver X approaches the corner and turns in hard too early, this will bring the rear of the car around, Driver X will then turn back into the slide and keep the car going around the corner while maintaining as much angle and speed as possible, then he will over correct and throw the car into another slide right after the first one, with as little straight lining as possible.

Can a RC car Drift?

Yes, if you`ve ever been involved with RC racing, you know the level of setup that even the basic RC Cards come with, and drifting is no exception. While a stock standard RC car can drift out of the box, there are some basic setup and chassis modification that will help you get more angle, speed and chicks

Where do I start?

The first thing you need is a RC car, I’ll use two examples, both of which I’ve had personal experience with, the Tamiya TT01 and the Tamiya TA05. The first step to drifting is to break that traction, due to the power to weight ratio of RC Cars we need a little help, Drift Tires are all you need to get sideways, but there is a little more you can do if you want to compete. If you can’t find RC Drift tires you can use insulation tape, be sure to wrap it in the same direction that the wheel will be turning, a good trick is to lay it down and roll you RC Car over it, this is the right way, Taped tires tend to work best on surfaces that already have a little to no traction, i.e. an underground parking lot, but they don’t last long. Drift tires all have different tractions, more traction = bigger drifts, but this is useless if you need to compete on a tight track as the amount of torque used to break traction will also generate a lot of speed, in the end it’s down to personal preference.

What next?

Okay so you taped your tires and played around a bit, not we need to get the car to be more predictable, all the standard racing setting apply, shocks, ride height and wheel angles are up to you, but if there is a must have it’s the rear differential, you need to lock it, this is also know as a spool diff, basically it means that both wheels must turn at the same time. The result is a car that will break and regain traction on command, the drifts will also be much easier to control, more throttle = more angle, less throttle = less angle.

TT01

The Tamiya TT01 uses a planetary gear setup for the rear diff, which is easy to convert (and convert back should you change your mind later) the two most command ways to lock this diff are 1. Open the Diff and fill it with glue from a glue gun, or 2. Take a small piece of fuel tubing ,cut it open along it’s length, and roll this around one of the planetary gears. Once done close the diff and check if it give the desired result before you put it back. The other option is to buy a hop-up spool diff.

TA05

The TA05 uses a ball diff at the back and the front, this is not as easy to modify, but it can be done. The way I modified mine was to use pop rivets. I opened the diff and removed the ball bearings and metal plates that the balls run along. I then drilled three small holes in the side, getting both halves of the diff. I then pop riveted them together and filed down the rivets. This worked, but be careful. 1. It’s not reversible and if you make a mistake the diff will be destroyed. 2. It doesn’t last long, eventually the forces that go through the diff will destroy this because it’s been weakened by holes. A Spool diff is available for the TA05 and this is the preferred options.

What about the front diff?

Now that we have a solid platform we can experiment with slightly different setups to find the one that suites us best, this varies from car to car, but the principle is the same. I personally love using a front one-way diff, or a center one-way diff for more control. The downside is that using brakes at any time is the same as using you e-brake (hand-brake) in a real car, the tail will slide around in a 180, while this can be useful to initiate a drift and transition to a second drift from the first it’s very easy to spin out, so most people prefer not to use the one-ways. Once again this is down to personal preference.

Why drifting is much better than racing.

Well I love both, but from the drifting side it takes a lot more skill and a lot less car, what I mean is that while racing takes skill, you can compensate with an awesome car, there is no way a TT01 will consistently win in a race against a carbon fibre racing machine. But with drifting you can, a TT01 can out perform any car out there, yes it will be difficult, but so much of drifting is down to driver skill that anything can happen. This being the case it’s also possible to get into drifting with very little financial backing (unlike racing)
