Drag Racing – A Multimillion-Dollar Business
Drag racing became a sanctioned sport back in the 1950′s, and has remained popular ever since. The World Wide Web gives an excellent, authoritative definition that reads as follows: “Drag racing is a form of auto racing in which cars or motorcycles attempt to complete a fairly short, straight and level course in the shortest amount of time. Drag racing originated in the United States and is still the most popular there. The most common distance is one quarter of a mile, although one eighth of a mile tracks are also popular, especially in the southeastern United States.”
While many people believe that drag racing is a popular sport only in the United States, there are numerous other countries where drag racing has quite a fan base. These countries include Canada, South Africa, Mexico, Malta, Australia, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand, Greece, England, the Caribbean, as well as many Scandinavian and European countries. At any given time, there are approximately 325 drag racing strips fully operational worldwide
Drag racing is essentially two cars racing against one another down a straight track to see who can cross the finish line first. Since there are no hair pin turns involved, this may sound like an easy feat, however, the driver must be able to have quick reactions times and be able to handle the car effectively. In addition, the car must be tuned to near perfection and operate well under extreme circumstances.
While many people are content to simply haul their dragster down to the local track every Saturday night and compete for bragging rights and trophies, there are many drag racers that take drag racing seriously and attend sanctioned events to compete for big titles and big money.
In professional drag racing, there are only five main categories, and these include Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Modified, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Bike. In the upper racing divisions, dragsters can reach speeds of up to 330 miles per hour! This means that a car performing at this rate of speed could travel the distance of a quarter mile track in a mere 4.45 seconds. If you have never witnessed this in person, it is an awesome sight to behold.
Drag racing has turned into a multimillion-dollar business; with companies paying for ad space on the racecars, as well as race promoters vying for television and radio time, drag racing is enjoying wide exposure. If you have yet to be exposed to drag racing, grab the family or a few friends and head on down to your closest racetrack! The fan who knows these and all the other trivia about drag racing is not going to only win enough money to buy his spouse some thing nice, he’ll have the ability to claim bragging rights as the most educated motor head around the block.
The next best thing to drag racing publications is merchandise. This may range from the valuable to the “what the heck is that?” What guy isn’t going to really like his “Christmas tree” alarm clock or his “Drag Racing Maniac” hoodie? For cool, vintage things, stop by the local swap meets or eBay. You’ll locate decals, posters, old magazines and plastic models. Keep a special look out for any Rat Fink memorabilia from “Big Daddy” Roth. It really is very collectible now.
If you are trying to find a gift On line and you don’t know very much about the quarter mile yourself, search under “pro stock,” “funny car,” “top fuel dragster” and “gasser.” These are all kinds of dragsters and can give you extra gift ideas.

For most people, the idea of drag racing implies exhilaration and excitement. It also connotes danger. It’s a good thing that radio-controlled cars can now enable anyone to experience the thrills and excitement of drag racing without being exposed to too much danger.
Drag racing is all about speed. As compared to ordinary radio-controlled car races, the drag racing with RC cars entails much more attention on setting-up the vehicle than having driving skills. The main deal with car racing is to eliminate the forces (aerodynamic) that prevent the car from attaining and maintaining maximum speed. The following things should be given much importance when racing RC cars at maximum speed:
Chassis
Getting and maintaining a good chassis for drag race RC cars is very important. The thing to remember is that there are numerous materials that make up modern RC drag cars today such as graphite and carbon fiber. They differ in how they support the cars and how they “flex” during acceleration. The chassis needs to have flexibility when accelerating is a key to attain the car’s maximum speed.
Front end design
Dragsters have distinct front-end designs. They are usually pointed to minimize the drag from the air. The front axles should be set up in a simple way to make them easier to adjust during accidents during race day.
Battery packs
Usually, RC car drag races are determined by the kind of battery pack that the cars are equipped with. Nickel-cadmium batteries are very popular nowadays. The batteries used in cars are usually in 6-cell or 7-cell packs. The two main things that one should look for in battery packs are internal impedance and voltage. These are two main indicators of power and speed. The battery packs used in RC drag racing are perhaps the most powerful in the whole RC racing arena.
Tires
The usual dragsters employ thin front wheels which are most often referred to as “pizza cutters” because they resemble the kitchen apparatus. When it comes to selecting tires, there are two beliefs: smaller is better and the “big wheels rule.” As with any other contradicting beliefs, both have advantages and disadvantages. At the end of the day, it’s personal taste that really counts in choosing the kinds of tires.
Weight
RC drag race cars have been stripped of their excess weight throughout the years. An optimum weight should be achieved to be able to get maximum acceleration.

Eleven new members are going to be inducted and welcomed by the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame. And such an event is going to be a grand one and a great deal especially to the upcoming new ones.
The whole ceremony is especially prepared for. The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing would host the mentioned event. It comes to life on the 15th of March and would be held at the Paramount Plaza Resort which is located in Gainesville, Florida.
Other companies are also willing to help out and be part of the induction ceremonies of the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame. It has been reported that Mopar Performance Parts, a good source of the best auto parts like the Nissan mud flap, would be sponsoring the activity. But it is not a surprise for Mopar has been joining in the fun for 16 years already.
The eleven new members can be said to be all experts in the drag racing field. These eleven honorees are Kenny Bernstein (a six time drag racing champion), Frank Bradley (another winner of these drag racing competition), Donnie Hampton (a drag racing champion), Ted Jones (owner of a drag racing strip), Jim McLennan (a drag car driver as well as owner of a drag racing strip), Dale Pulde (a drag racing driver who holds the title having the most number of wins in the IHRA history), Don Schumacher (a member of Team Mopar), Dave Uyehara (a builder of championship dragsters), Dave Zeuschel (a builder of legendary dragsters), Darrel Zimmerman (a director of one of NHRA’s divisions), and Bill Bader (an owner of a drag racing facility as well as a promoter of the sport). The latter would also be receiving the Founders Award for his exemplary contributions to drag racing.
The whole induction ceremonies would not only focus on the welcoming of the new members but the event would also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 392 Hemi engine. See, this engine is one of the best innovations that has ever happened for these drag racing members.
On this, Chris Cortez, the Chrysler Group’s senior vice president for global service and parts, says, “The 392 HEMI engine revolutionized not only drag racing, but the entire automotive industry.”

With the film “Milk” just off a win for two Oscars, the Harvey Milk School in New York City is enjoying a resurgence of sorts in the media. Another legacy to the slain gay activist’s honor is the high school established in New York 25 years ago by the Hetrick-Martin Institute to serve gay, lesbian and transgendered students. The school is unique in the city (if not in the world) as 25 percent of its students are transgendered – people who are born of one gender but identify with the other.
Enter 27-year-old drag queen Ryan Ong Palao, who’s currently a contestant on “RuPaul Drag Race” on the LOGO network, and better known to “Drag Race” viewers as “Ongina.” I caught up on episodes of the series this weekend and watched as Ongina won the MAC Viva Glam challenge, where the makeup company asked the queens to deliver a 30-second spot for the MAC line.
When Ong won the challenge, she collapsed into sobs on the runway and shared with the panel, fellow contestants and the world that she has been living with HIV for two years but has been too afraid to tell anyone. The confession was moving for anyone who witnessed it. RuPaul herself was crying profusely as the competition came to a sudden stop. I shed a few tears myself as Ongina pulled herself and her fabulous outfit back together and walked eloquently to the back of the stage.
Meanwhile, the Harvey Milk School has faced challenges of its own. With a drop in government and private funds, Hetrick-Martin has released 20 percent of its workforce and eliminated services it once provided to the Milk School. Increased demand for services to gay youth in New York has strained funds even more.
Last week, new MAC spokes-queen Ongina walked into the Harvey Milk School with a check for ,000, compliments of the make-up company (which generously provides funding to HIV/AIDS organizations). The staff and students met Ongina and accepted the much-needed donation while asking her questions about her drag queen experiences, and sought her makeup and costuming tips.
Ongina could relate to the kids she faced. Ong himself faced harassment while attending high school in Washington State and told the New York Times that he would have appreciated a “school that provided me as much of an education as a comfort zone.”
It may have taken her 10 years, but it looks like Ongina found that school and comfort zone – with plenty of people to inspire along the way. Now, back to the drag races.
