Chevrolet is one of the most famous car companies in America, which is known as the heartbeat of the country. This particular division of General Motors has so far produced some of the best and high performance muscle cars of the century that has made their mark in the history of muscle cars. Chevrolet started their lineup of strong, attractive yet affordable muscle cars in the 1960’s, and the company became an undisputed champion of producing some of the best muscle cars in the world and the journey is continued still today.
Chevrolet was the most popular auto manufacturer when it came to Muscle cars throughout the 60’s and the 70’s era. The company’s strength was at producing cars that delivered optimum performance at a much lesser cost. In 1961 the company introduced their infamous Super Sport or SS version of muscle cars, and this particular package was first available for the Chevrolet model Impala. Super Sport was mainly a signature of performance and all the models that were available with this performance option bore the distinctive SS markings on the exteriors. The Models of Chevrolet, which specifically fell under the SS category was- Camaro, Impala, Nova, Chevelle, El Camino, and Monte Carlo. The specialty of all these muscle cars was that they were all named by the company after their high powered engines.

Chevrolet Impala SS: The Super Sport Impala Model of Chevrolet is often considered as the first muscle car, which truly started the era of the strong and attractive muscle cars. Introduced in 1961, this particular model of Chevrolet has a glorifying history behind it and became a legend afterwards. Named after the African antelope, the model is renowned for its agility and iconic performance. It came with a high powered 409 cubic inch V8 engine. This full sized Chevy muscle car comprised of a specially built body with trimmed interiors, specifically built power steering and power brakes that came with metallic lining in a sintered form. One of the special features of this model was the inclusion of a Tachometer on the steering column. This particular SS model of Chevrolet is so far one of the bestselling muscle cars ever produced by the company.
Production Numbers: In 1961 out of 453 Impala SS cars only 142 was Impala SS 409. So far, Chevrolet has produced 43,775 Impala SS 409 cars.
Chevrolet Chevelle SS: After the huge success of the first American muscle car Chevrolet Impala SS, the company launched its second line up of Super Sport muscle cars called the Chevelle in the year 1964. Though the interior of this model was much similar to that of the Chevy Impala yet it came with a more compact design. The model was available throughout 1964 to 1977 model years. One interesting fact about this model is that the 1970’s, 396 version of Chevelle was typically named after its high powered 396 cubic inch V8 engine with 350 horse power. The model was a superb combination of ultra stylish looks, maximum performance and speed. The model came with body styles including, coupes, sedans, convertibles along with station wagons. Later in the 70’s the El Camino Model of Chevrolet was reintroduced specifically as a distinctive part of the new line up of Chevelle SS model of Chevrolet Muscle cars.
Production numbers: In 1964-total production of 387,119 cars, in 1965- total production of 397,750 cars, in 1966- total production of 471,072 cars, in 1967-total production of 403,963 cars, in 1968 total production of 464, 669 cars, in 1969- total production of 503,352 cars, in 1970- total production of 633,944 cars, in 1971 and in 1972- the total production were 387,025 and 450,842 respectively.
Chevrolet Nova SS: This particular short styled car truly had long run in the history of Chevy’s Super Sport muscle cars, and delivered a strong performance till the end of the era of high speed muscle cars. Though the car was smaller yet it delivered optimum speed. The most famous and admired version of Nova was the Chevrolet Nova SS 396 which was typically named after its strong and high powered engine.
Production Numbers: The total production of the model in 1968 includes 6,571 cars, in 1969- the total production was of 17,564 cars, in 1970- the total production was of 19,558 cars, in 1971- the total production included 7,015 cars, in 1972- total production included 12,309, in 1973- the total production was of 35,542 cars, and lastly in 1974- the total production number included 21,419 cars.
Chevrolet Camaro SS: introduced in the year 1967, Camaro became the most loved Super Sport muscle car ever produced by Chevy. This attractive Pony car was considered as one of the Americas hottest drives and was on the roads for more than thirty years, before its reintroduction in the 21st century.
Production numbers: total production in 1967- 34,411 cars, in 1968- 27,884 cars, in 1969- 34,932 cars, in 1970- 12,476 cars, in 1971- 8,377 cars, and lastly in 1972- 6,562 cars.
